Regional Industrial Develpment

The modernization of Kitimat Works will introduce economic benefits to the communities of Kitimat, Kitamaat Village, Terrace and the entire Northwest region of British Columbia during the construction phases.

In addition to the number of construction jobs created, the influx of workers to the surrounding communities will increase spending in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Rio Tinto Alcan’s investment of (US) $2.5 billion to renew its Kitimat smelter will also stimulate investor confidence and attract business and industry to the Northwest region of British Columbia.

Rio Tinto Alcan has and will continue to work with the region and economic development groups to stimulate job growth through the promotion of economic development and diversification.

Rio Tinto Alcan has dedicated a Regional Industrial Development Department to focus solely on company efforts to advance the interests of the local business community and to capitalize opportunities afforded for local growth through the modernization of Kitimat Works, which will ultimately secure a bright future for the aluminum industry in British Columbia, and create new and sustainable business opportunities for local and regional businesses.
