Michel Lamarre is Rio Tinto Alcan’s Project Director on the Kitimat Modernization Project.
Michel joined the project execution team in Kitimat, British Columbia on May 1, 2008. Previously, he was the Project Director of the Owner’s Team for Rio Tinto Alcan’s Coega smelter in South Africa.
Michel was raised in Shawinigan, Quebec and earned a bachelor degree in engineering from the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières.Since 1984, Michel has been a member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec.
Michel’s construction, engineering and project management career has led him to travel and work in South Africa, Mozambique, Australia, New Caledonia and Canada. After 17 years working predominantly outside of Canada, Michel and his family are now happily settling in Montreal. Michel directs the Kitimat Modernization Project team, and is assigned to execute a smelter project, which is expected to set the template for future smelters.The Kitimat mission and vision statement means executing “Better, Faster, Smarter” through a culture of HSE excellence.
Michel’s career began as a health and safety coordinator before he joined Becancour Aluminum smelter developing maintenance programs in the electrolysis area, as well as verification and start-up processes.In 1991, Michel joined SNC-Lavalin Inc. where he began his international career working on several aluminum smelter projects, which included Tomago in Australia; Alusaf and Hillside smelter in Richards Bay, South Africa, as Lead Engineer, (bake ovens), and then, as Area Manager (Reduction).
As a Project Manager, Michel first developed a mini pilot plant and then a full-scale pilot plant for Inco’s Goro Nickel in New Caledonia from 1996 to 1999. He returned to aluminum as Pre-Commissioning Manager for the Mozal Project, in Mozambique, and as Project Manager for the Hillside Smelter Expansion from 1999 to 2003. Michel’s most rewarding experience was the Mozal project where the team was proud of the legacy they had worked towards for the people of Mozambique.
Following his assignment as Senior Project Manager on the Goro Nickel project in 2004, Michel joined Rio Tinto Alcan and was appointed Project Director for the Owner’s team on the Coega smelter project.Rio Tinto Alcan welcomes Michel to the Kitimat Modernization Project Team.
